Carnitine

Carnitine: Information

Carnitine or L-carnitine is a compound present in almost all the body's cells. Carnitine is chemically similar to an amino acid, and is manufactured in the liver and kidneys from the amino acids L-lysine and L-methionine. Carnitine occurs naturally in many animal-source foods and a few plant source foods such as avocado.

Carnitine's Health Benefits

Carnitine's primary benefit is helping in the process of metabolizing fatty acids into energy. It is used by dieters, endurance athletes and those seeking to increase energy and stamina. Because carnitine is primarily manufactured in the liver and kidneys, carnitine supplementation may also be necessary for those with liver or kidney disease.

Acetyl-L-carnitine is an alternative form of L-carnitine. It has the same fat-metabolizing properties of carnitine but also used to increase mental energy and alertness.

Usage Carnitine Supplements

Use as directed. Dosages vary; general recommended dosage is 500-1000mg, 2-3 times per day. Carnitine can be taken with or without food and is available in capsule, liquid, and tablet form.

Side-effects and Cautions:

None noted. Nursing or pregnant women, those with a medical condition or taking medications should check with their doctor or pharmacist before using carnitine.
