DLPA

DLPA: Boosts Mental Energy, Mood, and Endorphins

DLPA is the abbreviation for the amino acid compound DL-phenylalanine. DLPA is a combination of two different forms of the amino acid phenylalanine; the L and D forms are structural mirror-images of each other. Of the two, the L-phenylalanine form is an essential nutrient, the best dietary sources being animal proteins like meats, dairy and fish. The D-form is synthetic, and not nutritionally essential, but has distinct properties that complement the L-form making them a useful and unique combination; no other amino acids are combined or used in this way.

Why DLPA Supplements Are Used

DLPA supplements are most often used to help improve mood and alertness and/or relieve pain. L-phenylalanine is precursor to neurotransmitters that can increase our mood, mental energy and state of awareness. The D-phenylalanine form inhibits the breakdown of natural painkilling endorphins, which can benefit some people with chronic pain without the side-effects of drugs. DLPA can work very well with other brain and mood boosters like St. John's wort, SAM-e. 5-HTP, or acetyl-l-carnitine. DLPA can be tried alone or in combination with cayenne pepper extracts, Wobenzym-N or curcumin supplements for effects on pain.1

Using DLPA

250 mg-1000 mg one or two times per day. Taking DLPA on an empty stomach is essential for it to work well, so plan each day's diet accordingly. Ideally, take DLPA no sooner than 3 hours since you last ate, and one hour before eating again.
