Lecithin

Lecithin: Information

Lecithin is a naturally occurring fatty substance found in the body and in many plant and animal food sources, including eggs, liver, peanuts, soybeans, and wheat germ. Lecithin is commercially used as an emulsifier in processed foods, and is available as a dietary supplement. Lecithin is an excellent source of choline (a B vitamin), which is essential for proper cell membrane function and in fetal development. Choline is found in a variety of food sources, and deficiencies are rare in North America.

Health Benefits

Lecithin supplements provide beneficial phospholipids like phopsphatidyl serine as well as brain-boosting nutrients like the B-vitamin choline. Lecithin may support healthy cholesterol levels and liver function in addition to improving brain function.

Using Lecithin

Use lecithin granules in protein shakes, or sprinkled onto foods. Lecithin is nearly tasteless and has a nutty consistency.

Side-effects and Cautions:

Consult your physician before using lecithin if you have bi-polar disorder or depression, as this supplement may worsen symptoms. Use as directed.
