Broccoli

Broccoli and DIM Supplements: Information

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussel's sprouts and cabbage are among the healthiest and most-nutrient rich foods. Although they provide valuable fiber and phytonutrients like other vegetables, cruciferous vegetables are nutritionally unique because of their sulfur-containing compounds known as glucosinolates. Glucosinolates are metabolized into compounds like indole 3-carbinol (I3C) and di-indolemethane (DIM). Cruciferous vegetables, I3C and DIM have all been studied for their effect on estrogen metabolism and possible preventative role in hormone-related health problems.1

Broccoli and DIM: Health Benefits

Broccoli and DIM supplements provide concentrated and consistent amounts of the most beneficial nutrients in cruciferous vegetables. They are more convenient and cost-effective than trying to obtain these nutrients from whole foods, although not a replacement for whole foods.

Using Broccoli and DIM Supplements

Use broccoli and DIM supplements as directed. Work with your doctor if you suspect that hormones may be playing a role in any health problem.

Side-effects and Cautions:

The safety of DIM supplements for pregnant and lactating women has not been established.
