DGL (De-Glycyrrhizinated Licorice): Information
Licorice is the root of the plant known botanically as Glycyrrhiza glabra. Licorice root has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for a wide range of purposes. In traditional Chinese medicine, licorice is always used included to harmonize the various ingredients in an herb formula. DGL (De-Glycyrrhizinated Licorice) is a form of licorice from which the compound Glycyrrhizin has been removed. Glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure in some people making licorice supplements problematic for those with hypertension.
Health Benefits of DGL Licorice
DGL is used to soothe and aid the lining of the stomach, often by those with a history of ulcer, gastritis or GERD. DGL licorice also retains most of the properties of regular untreated licorice and can be used as an effective expectorant, as it is in many commercial cough and cold products. DGL licorice may also be useful both mouth ulcers like canker sores.

Side-effects and Cautions:
Untreated licorice can raise blood pressure. The DGL form does not have this property.
