Kava kava, known botanically as Piper methysticum is a sedative herb, native to islands in the Western Pacific. Kava was traditionally used as a ceremonial herb. Modern kava supplements are used to promote relaxation. Kava's active ingredients are though to be kavalactones, which are concentrated in the plant’s thick roots.

Studies have shown kavalactones are effective in promoting a calming effect by acting upon the body’s limbic system – a region of the brain that coordinates a physical response to our emotional and psychological state.
