Vitamin B-6: Overview

Vitamin B-6 is the collective term for pyridoxine, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine; and may commonly refer to pyridoxine alone. B-6 is one of the B-complex vitamins which also includes biotin, choline, folic acid, inositol, vitamin B-2, vitamin B-3, vitamin B-5, vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-12.

Vitamin B-6 is involved in many biological processes, including the metabolism of glycogen and amino acids; and the manufacture of hemoglobin and the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

Vitamin B-6 Deficiency

B-6 deficiency may occur in the elderly and individuals suffering from malabsorption, uremia, cancer, serious heart problems, alcoholism, and HIV disease. Sufficient amounts of Vitamin B-6 may be obtained from a healthy, balanced diet.

Vitamin B-6's Health Benefits

In addition to being necessary for good health, B-6 has been shown to have other benefits. Studies have shown vitamin B-6 to help relieve the unpleasant symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). According to some research, B-6 may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems. Vitamin B-6 has also been shown to significantly reduce nausea related to pregnancy and radiation therapy. More research is needed.
