Quality R-ALA
I adhered to this manufacturer's dosing recommendations of 1-2 capsules 2-3x daily. Specifically, I took 1 capsule 3x/day with meals. After about 6 days on this product with no other changes to my diet/exercise/supplement regimen, I started having prolonged tachycardia events with heart rates of 115-120+bpm with my normal heart rate being between 58-78bpm. When I stopped this supplement, the tachy events subsided. I have taken the NOW Foods brand of ALA 600mg dosing at rate of 1 capsule 2-3x/day with meals without such side effects. NOW foods is a blend of R and S ALA. That said, I believe this being the pure form of R-ALA, the supplementation recommendations are a bit high (at least for me). I think the R-S form (those brands that don't indicate are said to be blended form pure (R) and synthetic(S) ALA as industry standard) have recommended dosages of 600mg, 2-3x/daily by the holistic practitioner groups. In the pure form, this being 125mg of *pure* ALA makes this too potent for me to keep the dosing range at 600mg or better. One website on the benefits of ALA supplements for neuropathy indicated R-ALA has 12x more efficacy over R/S-ALA blends. It would seem therefore that the dosing for pure/R-ala should be reduced over requirements for the blended R-S -ALA. Finally, there are recommendations to seek labeling that indicates 'stabilized' form of ALA for supplements because it tends to reduce potency and change with various exposures to light, heat, time, etc.
