A Tasty Addition to Your Shakes
If you want to know why I gave this 4 out of 5, please read the entire review. In short, this product's quality is excellent.
Maca powder is a very pleasant-smelling & tasting supplement to add to your shakes. If you like butterscotch at all, you'll love the flavor that Maca adds to your shakes! Maca powder imparts a very distinct--but not strong or overpowering--flavor that is amazingly quite like butterscotch, but thankfully not sweet. I began using it because it is supposed to help depression and lack of motivation, which I have because I unfortunately suffer from PTSD. My depression isn't severe--only moderate--but all the same; I prefer not to take harsh prescription medicines and go the holistic route for treating most all of my ailments.
Recently I've been adding 1-3tsp of Maca powder to my morning protein shakes. I customize my shakes based on each day's activity level, but I always use a combination of water, coconut milk, and a protein powder; either Vega Sport Performance Protein (Berry) or Rainbow Light brown rice protein, or both. I add small amounts of both stevia and coconut sugar for sweetening. This shake mix is excellent for my needs and it gives me a wonderfully full feeling. Since I've added Maca powder every day for a little more than two weeks, there have been some, but not any truly profound effects on my depression or any improvement to my low level of motivation. That said, those who've studied extensively have reported that it takes anywhere from three to four weeks to become fully active in your system. I've stuck with it because Maca is an old root which Andean cultures have used for hundreds (if not thousands) of years for several purposes. I tend to gravitate toward supplements like these which have traditional and long-standing use in cultural medicine & food, and I'm happy to continue to give Maca a chance because of its great taste and myriad health benefits.
All in all, I give it 4 out of 5 stars because while the taste is GREAT, the effects are marginal, or they're just very slow to take effect--time will tell (I will update this review if the effects improve). As far as this product's quality is concerned, it's great. It seems as though it is a very pure product; based on my own research regarding its appearance (both dry & mixed), and its taste & smell, there seem to be no additives. Another great attribute of Maca powder is that it's hygroscopic--it dissolves in water remarkably well which is wonderful, as the flavor can be fully incorporated into your shake.
