Information about Bladderwrack
Bladderwrack or Fucus vesiculosus, is a type of seaweed found on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Bladderwrack is rich in iodine, a substance that helps stimulate the thyroid gland.
Health Benefits of Bladderwrack
Bladderwrack is most often used as an herbal remedy for under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism), as the iodine content acts to stimulate a sluggish thyroid gland. The supplement is also used in cases of high cholesterol, arteriosclerosis, overweight, amenorrhea (absence of a menstrual period) and exhaustion. Some research suggests that bladderwrack can help to lower estrogen while raising levels of progesterone, which can have a favorable impact on the menstrual cycles of some women.1
Using Bladderwrack
Use as directed. The iodine content of bladderwrack formulations may vary by manufacturer.
Side-effects and Cautions:
Pregnant/lactating women and individuals with hyperthyroidism should not take bladderwrack. Consult your physician before using this supplement, especially if you have a serious medical condition.
